Want to live in a "walkable" neighborhood?  Then the "highlands" as it is often called is for you.  It derives its name from the intersection of Virginia and North Highland avenues and was developed in the early 1900s as one of Atlanta's early suburbs.  The highlands offers charm galore and is one of Atlanta's most popular places to live, shop and eat.  There are six commercial "villages" intermixed with classic  craftsman bungalow homes and cottages. The Virginia-Highland Historic District is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In June, the neighborhood celebrates with Summerfest, a festival along Virginia Avenue that features an excellent juried art show, food and live music.  This neighborhood really has it all but then I'm a little biased since this is where I chose to live!
